After a lengthy absence, organised basketball is set to return to the mainstream when Pepsi Sonics stages its ‘Refresh Your Game’ 2012 Tournament which is expected to bounce off on September 28, at the Burnham Court on Carmichael and Middle Streets.
Yesterday, in the Boardroom of Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL) Marketing Assistant Alexis Langhorne confirmed the Company support for the tournament in the presence of President of the club Merle Chalmers-Casey and other executive members and participating clubs representatives.
Langhorne expressed satisfaction with the work being done by the club and even referred to the initiative as a good one which they had no reservation in supporting.
She disclosed that the Company will be refreshing the players with Gatorade and this is addition to the offer of cash incentives for the winners of the First Division Competition.
The DDL representative urged the clubs and players to come out and help make the tournament a successful one.
Chalmers-Casey in her remarks thanked the Company for sticking with them over the years and promised a tournament that will surely re-ignite the interest in the sport.
According to her, games will be played on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays with two games starting from 19:00 hrs slated for the former, while the weekends will see three matches being played from 17:00 hrs.
Prize monies totaling in excess of $260,000 in cash and trophies will be up for grabs.
Meanwhile, former national centre Eon ‘Watusi’ Andrews gave a brief outline about the late Col. Godwin McPherson, who held the stewardship of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation from 1988-2009 when he passed away, making him the longest serving President in the history of the Body.
