His contribution towards the elevation and development of Scrabble has been well documented and former national scrabble champion, Fred Collins, has been aptly rewarded when the executives of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) dedicated a tournament in his honour dubbed ‘The Fred Collins Open Championships’ slated for this Sunday at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Thomas lands. Several top guns will line up to cart off the spoils in this inaugural tournament including Collins’ successor, Abigail McDonald, James Krakowsky, Moen Gafoor, Colin Chichester, Ulric Harris, Leon Belony and Grace Hercules among others.
The younger players will also be anxious to inscribe their names on the trophy and the top seeds will do well to keep their eyes on Maurice Mangru, Delon Moffat and Wayne Cave, players that have improved tremendously over the past months.
The players will compete for lucrative prizes donated by corporate Guyana and the three top finishers will be aptly rewarded. Further, the best player outside of the top ten rankings will receive a special prize in keeping with the GASP developmental initiative.
Registration begins at 09:45hrs and the first tile would be moved at 10:00hrs. The registration fee remains at $500.
