Basketball Association (GABA) League continues at the Burnham Court, Middle Street Georgetown and Banks DIH Ltd has joined several other sponsors to ensure that the event is successfully staged. Activities got underway in February and after a short break will resume within the next 9 days. The organizers are encouraging supporters to troop to the venue in support of their favourite teams.
Yesterday morning, the sponsors convened a press briefing at their Thirst Park offices where the Company’s Sales and Marketing Executive, Carlton Joao handed over the package to his colleague and President of the GABA, David Carto. The beverage company is sponsoring the event under its Power Aid Coca Cola Product and Mr. Joao stated that the product will play a major role in the hydration of the players. He said that his company was happy to offer corporate assistance and he anticipates the gesture would be the catalyst to enhanced future relations with the GABA.
Mr. Carto expressed delight at the gesture and assured Mr. Joao that it would go a long way towards the staging of the tournament. The GABA President said that he was a mite disappointed with the attendance level so far but remains optimistic the there will be improvement in this department as the tournament progresses.
Thirteen teams out of Georgetown and another two from West Coast Demerara are participating in the tournament and Mr. Carto said that the tournament is expected to revitalize the sport in the Capital City while enabling administrators to seed the respective teams.
To date 105 games have been contested and the battle for the top spot will continue into the end of May where the top 8 teams emerging from the round robin will engage in a 7 games playoff to establish the respective winners.
The winning team carts off $250,000 while the second place team receives half that amount. The team finishing third wins $60,000. Additionally, the organizers have indicated that one member of each team would be identified for a scholarship at a tertiary institution to be identified. Officials are also mulling the presentation of basketball gears to the top 8 teams but this gesture would be dependent on the corporate support received.
