Under the theme “Encouraging and creating respect for religious, cultural and other forms of diversity in a plural society” the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) in collaboration with multi-stakeholders of Region Four will be planning the upcoming Culture Fest.
The event will be held on Sunday, May 22, at the Carifesta Sports Complex (former GNS ground), Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown starting at 13:30 hours.
Similar stages of the event were held in Regions Two and Three on April 3, last.
Admission to Region Four Culture Fest is free. The event will feature a variety of artistes from various religious and cultural organisations in Region Four. To date, some 16 groups have registered their interest in performing.
There will be an exhibition and sale of traditional foods and beverages and cultural artifacts. Already some 20 organisations have reserved exhibition spaces.
According to the ERC, close to 60 organisations and groups have registered for sports, including football, softball cricket, table tennis, dominoes and volleyball, there will also be novelty games such as lime-and-spoon, tug-O-war and sack-race.
Schools and youth groups from across the Region will be taking part in an Impromptu Speech Competition. There will be a special segment on topical issues for adults. Some 40 trophies and other prizes and awards are there for the taking.
Culture Fest is more than a regular ‘lime’. It offers the opportunity for people of different races, religions and cultures to learn about the lifestyles of others and teach others about their lifestyles.
It will bring together Guyanese of different races, cultures and religions into a single safe space where they can play and have fun together while learning of each other’s way of life. Persons are encouraged to come out and bring their families and friends along. The sale or consumption of alcohol within the venue will be prohibited.
