Kevin Allicock benefited from a revision of the score, earning a points decision against Moolchand Sankar when activities in the amateur segment of the tenth edition of the ProAm boxing extravaganza concluded at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) Friday evening last.
In what was easily the best bout in the amateur segment of the card both boxers engaged in toe to toe exchanges, punctuated with astute displays of boxing skill that thrilled the small but appreciative crowd at the venue.
Allicock represented the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym in the junior flyweight contest, while Sankar represented the Ricola Boxing Gym. Indeed it was a fine display by both pugilists and it was indeed a pity that one had to lose.
At first Sankar was adjudged the winner by the narrowest of margins. This announcement elicited protest from Allicock’s coaches who requested a review of the verdict. Kaieteur Sport understands that a review panel was immediately convened and several minutes later they voted unanimously for a reversal of the verdict.
One of the members of the panel explained that after Sankar’s seconds had lodged the appeal a three member jury was tasked with addressing the concerns.
The official further said that Sankar had received point deductions on two occasions but this was not reflected in one of the judge’s score card.
The review panel subsequently corrected this anomaly and Allicock ended up with the most points and subsequently earned a 2-1 verdict.
Meanwhile, Joel Williamson who represented the Berbice based Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym endorsed the belief that once given some attention the rural lads would emulate their city counterparts. The pint size lad, fighting in the 80-84lbs category fought courageously to register a 3-0 decision over Dewani Lampkin.
Romano Clarke (GDF) was also in winners row after stopping David Thomas inside the distance (2:50secs of round one) in their junior welterweight bout. Middleweight, Ron Smith (GDF) also won his bout against Kelsie George (PRBG) to cap off a night of entertaining amateur boxing. For their efforts, the participating amateur boxers were presented with a gift voucher valued $10, 000 by Courts, Guyana’s leading furniture store.
Meanwhile, the administrators of GABA are urging the boxers to heighten their preparations for the Champion of Champions boxing tournament slated to get underway at the CASH from December 17-19.
The coaches would be on the lookout for special talent to nurture for the overseas tournaments expected to be staged during the new year.
