The first night was entertaining and the second night proved to be just as action packed and enthralling when the Stabroek Warriors Sports 5th Annual 5 a-side Inter Market Futsal Football tournament continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Thursday evening. Fans were entertained with six matches proper, plus an exhibition encounter and each was as exciting as the other. The night started out successfully for LaPenitence Market who registered a come from behind 5-4 victory over New Amsterdam in a match that was fast and furious.
From the onset it appeared as though New Amsterdam were going to take the match without any fuss, registering two early successes within the first five minutes. However, they had their plans disrupted when a determined LaPenitence Market managed to create the opportunities after several enterprising plays to equalize the situation 2-2 at the half time whistle.
New Amsterdam reasserted itself just after the resumption with a scorcher that sent them ahead. Instead of diminishing, the goal served to buoy the spirits of LaPenitence Market. That team went on to score twice in quick succession to take their tally to 5 while New Amsterdam lagged behind on 3. As the minutes wound down New Amsterdam valiantly attacked and managed to close the gap with a stinging strike that had goal all over it from the onset.
Enterprising plays by that team failed to pierce the opposition’s goal and eventually New Amsterdam was hampered by time constraints. The shrill sound of the referee’s whistle put paid to their ambitions. With that victory, LaPenitence Market has advanced to the quarterfinals which commences tomorrow night at the same venue.
The encounter between Kitty and Buxton evolved into another thriller after the latter team drew first blood, registering twice in quick succession.
Kitty Market held its nerve and in short time slammed in 4 goals to end the first half with the score on 4-2, setting the stage for an interesting second half.
Upon resumption, Kitty Market widened the advantage by two more goals before Buxton Market responded with two of their own and the score to 6-4 in the opposition’s favour. Time proved to be the decisive factor and Kitty progressed by dint of their earlier aggression.
In the other matches, Melanie defeated Melani 3-2 while the final game of the night between Stewartville and Plaisance was aborted following a blackout. Up to then the former team was ahead 1-0. The organizers have since decided that the match would be replayed on a later date.
The tournament continues tomorrow with several exciting encounters. Kick off time is 19:00hrs.
