Seven athletes from the Enmore Athletics Club are scheduled to leave Guyana early next month to participate in the annual Hampton International Games scheduled for Trinidad and Tobago from July 2-4. Those selected for national duty are Malcolm Walcott (Boys U17, 800 &1500m), Calvin Belgrave (Boys U15, 200 & 400m), Ornesto Thomas (Boys U15, 800 and 1500m), Keith Gordon (Boys U20, 800, 1500 and 5000m), Kade Pearce (Boys U17, 100, 200, 400m and long jump) and Keith Semple (Boys 100 and 200m, Open).
The team, and more specifically, Malcolm Walcott, received some timely and much needed support from the Managing Director of Mohamed Rahim and Sons, Shahim Rahim, to offset the demanding financial aspect of the trip.
The handing over ceremony was conducted Friday morning last at the Betterverwagting offices of Mohamed Rahim and Sons.
Shortly after making the presentation Mr. Mohamed urged Walcott to train assiduously to realize his goals. He said that he knew that Walcott was from the Betterverwagting area and as such he (Mr. Mohamed) felt a sense of responsibility to assist. Mr. Mohamed heads an entity that deals in heavy duty equipment and civil engineering with another branch on the Corentyne.
Coach of the Enmore Athletics Club, John Martins expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Mohamed even as he pledged to lead the team to Caribbean honour.
Walcott, a 15 year old athlete has been shortlisted by the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) to compete in the inaugural World Youth Olympics in Singapore in the U17 800 and 1500m events. He has had a phenomenal rise over the past seven months winning three silver medals at last year’s National School Championships in Berbice. He has registered victories in all of the competitions in which he has entered so far for the year, his most momentous achievement coming at the 2010 Inter-Guiana Games staged in French Guiana last month where he copped a bronze after competing in the 800m event. His timing for that race was 2 minutes, one second.
In the meantime, the athletes continue preparations daily at their East Coast headquarters under the tutelage of Mr. Martins.
