The first over was a maiden and only 23 runs came from the last 4 but some brutal hitting in between ensured Australia still managed to reach 184-5 when their 20 overs expired in yesterday’s opening match on day two of the Super Eights stage of the ICC 20/20 World Cup at the Kensington Oval. Australia eventually won by 49 runs.
Australia are the undisputed kings of world cricket but they are yet to win a 20/20 tile and their performances so far this season after an upset defeat to Zimbabwe in a warm-up game suggest that they realise that while 20/20 is regarded as the ‘fun version’ of the cricket family it is still important enough to win to be truly regarded as an all-conquering team.
Already they share the highest total in this year’s tournament (191) with England and yesterday their bowlers fired out the Indians on a nice juicy track which caused all sorts of worries for the Indians who were bowled out for 135 in 17.4 overs.
At 50-7 it appeared Kenya’s record-low 67 against Ireland was in trouble before the 23-year-old Rohit Sharma hit 6 sixes and 4 fours in a 46-ball 79 to salvage some pride for India, the inaugural winners in 2007.
But only Harbhajan Singh (13) of the other batsmen reached double figures as Dirk Nannes (3-25) and his new ball partner Shaun Tait (3-21) exposed the Indians discomfort to pace and bounce.
Earlier, Harbhjan began with a maiden but David Warner who hit 7 sixes and 2 fours from 42 balls in 72 and Shane Watson whose 32-ball 54 was decorated with 6 sixes and a four, added 104 in 10 overs for the first wicket before Yusuf Pathan made the break through by getting rid of Watson.
David Hussy chipped in with a cameo 35 but the Indians bowled well at the death to prevent Australia from reach 200. But in the end even 150 would have been enough.
Scores: Australia 184 for 5 (Warner 72, Watson 54) beat India 135 (Rohit 79*, Tait 3-21, Nannes 3-25) by 49 runs.
