Officials of the ruling amateur boxing body, AIBA, have approved the certification of four local coaches following an evaluation process conducted by AIBA Coaches Commission, AIBA Headquarters, recently. The levels of another 465 coaches affiliated to the parent body worldwide are currently pending, due to lack of information on the identified coaches.
Coach of the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym, James Walcott, is now a star one coach while Forgotten Youth Foundation coach, Siebert Blake is a star two coach. Guyana Defence Force coach Terrence Poole and Carl Franklyn are also categorized at the Star 2 level.
AIBA President, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu has recently informed the various associations under the auspices of his organization that his organization will be certifying 1,639 coaches at three specific levels, identified as Star 3A, 3B and 3C. Further, subsequent to this categorization, and based on the coaches’ training experience and performances among other criteria, will be certifying a specified number of coaches for each level. To this effect, three hundred and twenty eight coaches will be categorized in the ‘3 Star’ category while a further 319 will be ‘2 Star’ coaches. Five hundred and twenty seven coaches worldwide would be categorized as ‘Star 1’ coaches.
A further assessment would see ‘3 Star’ coaches categorized into three distinct levels, 3A, 3B and 3C. Elevation into these categories will be based on the performance of the association countries in major AIBA events.
Meanwhile, AIBA is currently developing a standard coaching manual as part of the AIBA Boxing Academy. On completion the coaches will be developed to conduct national and regional coaching seminars and tests to increase the coaches’ levels. At the end of the 2012 Olympics in England, AIBA has mandated that only certified coaches and seconds under its auspices would be able to act as seconds in all of its approved competitions.
