Best teams in Georgetown, Linden on the cards
The much-anticipated National Super-Eight Inter-Ward Basketball Championship will be officially launched today after months of planning and fine-tuning for what is expected to be the first mega event in the sport in the 2010/11 Season.
Following the success of last year’s return of the Georgetown Inter-Ward competition the national version is now geared at bringing together the country’s best Wards in a battle to decide the best basketball-playing community.
Kaieteur Sport is aware that the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) is currently putting the final preparations in place to host the event with the support of their Linden sub-association counterparts and the national federation.
Initially, the idea of the National Ward event came up last year but the Georgetown sub-association was reluctant to launch the event, bearing in mind they had not pulled all the stops and had not received full corporate green lights.
The GABA was of the view then that if the product is not fully thought through then the process of getting it to the public had to wait. With that aside, all systems are not firmly in place to host what should be a superb competition.
The tournament forms part of the Georgetown Basketball Advancement Programme and is expected to receive full support from luminaries. It has the success of the Georgetown Inter-Ward event to build on, which was a huge event.
This newspaper understands that the plan is to make the National Inter-Ward contest an annual one on the fixture of the GABA. The quest for supremacy will return with all the teams that have been invited to the colossal competition.
The top three teams in the well-attended Georgetown Inter-Ward contest last year, North Ruimveldt, Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust and Albouystown/Charlestown will take on the top two in Linden, Central Mackenzie and Christianburg.
Additionally, the other teams that will make up the eight wards are East Coast Combined, East Bank Combined and New Amsterdam. The team that wins this event could safely be regarded as the number one basketball community in Guyana. (Edison Jefford)
