Aiming to take Caribbean Championships by storm
Guyana’s 15-man team selected for the 4th Annual International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF) Caribbean Islands Bench Press & Powerlifting Championships set for the Princess Hotel March 18-20 are in the home stretch of preparations.
Kaieteur Sport caught up with some of the athletes training at Kingsrow Barbel Club, Thomas Street including Current Masters M1 Record holder ‘Big’ John Edwards who said that they were on target and are eagerly awaiting the start of the championships.
Also working out were 2009 Masters Champion Winston Stoby, Masters M2 lifter Edwin Gordon Spencer, National Masters M2 Champion Errol ‘Big Man’ Henry and Ryan ‘Juice’ Williams.
Edwards informed that they are training four days per week and will end all training on Monday next prior to the championships set for next weekend. Six countries will be competing against hosts Guyana, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, United States of America and the United States Virgin Islands.
Over 65 athletes (male and female) are expected to be here and will start arriving next Wednesday.
Kaieteur Sport will be visiting the other gyms to monitor the progress of the other athletes who are training at Buddies on Sheriff Street and in Berbice.
Members of the public are being urged by the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation and the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport to come out in their numbers and support Team Guyana next weekend at Princess Hotel.
