A lot of Guyana’s fortunes rested on Narsingh Deonarine yesterday but the Test player fell 2 balls after playing this square drive off Miller as Guyana crashed to defeat. (Sean Devers photo)

A fighting 9th wicket partnership between Albion spin twins Veerasammy Permaul and Davendra Bishoo failed to prevent Guyana from crashing to a crushing innings and 27-run defeat yesterday against defending champions Jamaica before lunch on the final day of their 3rd round Regional 4-Day cricket encounter at the Foursquare Oval in rural Barbados.
Needing 263 to make Jamaica bat a second time, Guyana began the final day on 161-4 and capitulated to 236 all out 5 minutes before lunch as Test medium pacer David Bernard grabbed 6-40 and got support from West Indies left-arm spinner Nikita Miller who took 2-50 to follow up his first innings 6-42.
Permaul, who hit 6 fours and a six from 60 balls and 80 minutes in a career-best 42, added 58 with Bishoo (18) after joining forces at 178-8 when Royston Crandon (4) was caught at slip off Miller.
The Guyana tail wagged with both batsmen, especially Permaul who got off the mark with a delightful cover driven boundary off Bernard’s hat-trick delivery, playing positive cricket in sweltering heat. Scores: Jam 429, Guy 166 & 236.
Guyana resumed on 161-4 and lost the inform Narsingh Deonarine (13) before Guyana had scored as the South Americans started the final day in horrendous fashion.
Deonarine, who scored a century in Antigua, pulled a long hop from Miller straight to Skipper Tamar Lambert at short mid-wicket in the 2nd over of the day’s play.
In sunny conditions and watched by a small crowd, Derwin Christian (9) was bowled by Bernard who trapped Esuan Crandon (0) leg before next ball as Guyana slumped to 174-7.
Royston Crandon (4) then edged a ball to slip which bounced and turned from Miller to leave Guyana wobbling on the ropes at 178-8 at 10:38hrs.
Permaul and Bishoo defied the Jamaica bowling for an hour and 16 minutes to see their team to 236 before Bishoo (18) threw his wicket away by skying leg-spinner Browne to Bernard at mid-on to end their half-century partnership.
Permaul, who has scored fifties batting at number 3 for Albion was then bowled by Bernard after being dropped at cover by Miller before he had reached double figures to end the match with 2 sessions remaining.
Guyana, who finished in the cellar position last year, go into Friday’s game with just 3 points from 2 matches. Yesterday’s win was the third in a row by Jamaica who won back-to-back first class titles in 2008 and last year and the emphatic win took them to the maximum 36 points from 3 matches.
While the Jamaicans will have a rest after drawing the bye in the next round Guyana will hope for an improved performance against CCC who have 9 points more than them despite 2 consecutive defeats after an upset win against Trinidad and Tobago in the opening round in Jamaica.
Gajanand Singh and Chris Barnwell are expected to replace West Indies players Travis Dowlin and Deonarine in the Guyana squad for their next match against CCC which starts here on Friday.
Skipper Sewnarine Chattergoon said he was disappointed with his team’s overall performance in their last match and sees the departure of Dowlin and Deonarine as an opportunity for the replacement players and the young guns to make a meaningful contribution at this level.
Chattergoon wants to see the bowlers bowl with more consistency and especially the spinners show more patience after the bowling attack conceded 400 plus totals against both of the teams they have played so far.
Guyana is scheduled to practice today, tomorrow and Thursday and will hope to return home for their 4th match against Barbados at Albion from February 12-15 with at least 6 more points from their next match.
