World Class storms to two wins,
Zenyatta also outstanding
Turfites turned out in their thousands to witness a grand day of racing when the Rising Sun Turf Club in collaboration with the Lions Clubs of Durban Park and the Central Demerara Lions staged a grand and successful day of horseracing at the clubs entity at Arima Park, West Coast Berbice.
Miss Republic of the Colin Elcock Delmur Trading Company stables lived up to its pre-race billing with a crushing win in the feature C class race to take the $300,000 purse and the Lions Clubs trophy.
With Paul Delph in the stirrups the champion horse was literally toying with the field as the rest of the competitors tried their best to get ahead of the pack. It was not until the field took the turn for home, that Delph decided that enough was enough, opened up like a jet plane on its take off to win easily by some 6 lengths. Jumbo Joy, Mattarazzi and Miss Orientate in its first outing in Guyana occupied the other positions.
Night Crescendo of the Crawford stable, with Kevin Paul on the Mount, then took its turn to sweep the field with it own devastating run down the homestretch for another compelling victory in the Three Year old 1400m gallop for its fourth straight win in five starts. The $250,000 prize and the Ayube Haniff trophy went with that victory.
The racehorse was at the back with about half of the race already completed and with a few powerful strides tore to the front and literally lit up the track on the way to victory by some eight lengths with Top of the Line, Zip a De Do Dah and Prixie Fire running cold as they rounded out the money.
Zenyatta imported by Colin Elcock of the Delmur Trading Company stables displayed why it is considered as the top Two year old horse in the country with another impressive performance in one of the most convincing victory for the day. The animal was unstoppable winning from gate to pole.
With jockey Prem Chandra in charge it opened up a sizable lead by the halfway mark and in ‘Usain Bolt-like fashion’ literally cruised the rest of the distance and still won by about 6 lengths. Stormy Water, Mona Lisa and World News rounded out the top finishers.
World Class a G 3 animal carrying a weight of 108 pounds, also imported by Colin Elcock but now owned by Dave Vibert of Lenny Singh stables and trained by Singh, was in a class by itself with two impressive wins, finishing strong in both the F class and G class races.
Ridden by Kevin Paul, the animal, which took some time to get used to the local conditions, first had things it way in the F class event which had a winning purse of $160,000 and the Lions Club trophy at stake over a distance of 1300m. The Gap, Fresh Prospect and Prospectors Pride could not withstand the blistering finish of World class as they rounded out the money.
Skillfully ridden by Jockey Krishna Singh in the G class sprint, World Class once again tore down the homestretch to leave Finishing Touch, Gigli and Maracas Star in its wake to capture the $100,000 first prize compliments of GT&T and the Ivor English trophy in the 1100m sprint.
Finishing Touch of the Mahendra Persaud stable with Kumar Singh on board returned to the track and had enough in its tank to edge out Prixie Fire in one of the closest race of the day to take the H class 1300m event and the Sterling Products trophy and the $90,000 prize. The race was so close that the announcement of the winner by the judges brought some dissatisfaction among some Turfites. Vanessa and Casino Royal rounded out the top finishers. Red Bull of the Shamsundar stable and ridden by the owner was well charged up as it ran from behind to take the Division 1&2 event along with the Goodwood Racing Service trophy and $80,000 top prize in the 1300m race. Easy Go had a difficult time as it finished second ahead of Madonna. In the individual category The Singh Stables was adjudged the top entity on show, while Jockey Kevin Paul was the top rider on show and Word Class the top horse of the day.
The respective winners were presented with their accolades compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall Bourda Market.
Some 55 horses took part in the day’s activity which had over $2.5M in cash and trophies at stake. Proceeds from the event go entirely to charity. Among those in attendance were Attorney at law and Member of Parliament Debra Backer of the Durban Parks Lions Club who assisted with the presentation ceremony. Minister of Labour Manzoor Nadir and President of the Guyana Cricket Board Chetram Singh were also a part of the day’s proceedings.
The next horse race meet is fixed for the Port Mourant racetrack on Sunday December 13.
