National players Deon Ferrier of Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) and GCC’s Vishal Singh scored centuries yesterday in the Demerara zone of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) National 3-day cricket competition to give their respective teams first innings points.
This was a day after they were denied the opportunity of converting unbeaten fifties into tons in the GCB 4-Day competition against Demerara because a Primary school sports event resulted in the final day of the match between the Rest Team and Demerara being abandoned at the Police ground.
Spinners Kevin Yadram took 6-32 from Enterprise while Everest’s Javeed Rasheed and DCC’s Totaram Bishoo were the other bowlers to capture 5-wicket haul in yesterday’s action.
At MSC, the host began the 2nd day on 152-2 replying to the 154 made by Police and declared 8 minutes after Tea for 377-5. The Cops, set 223 to avoid an innings defeat slipped from 101-1 to 121-4 by the close of the penultimate day despite a pugnacious 31-ball 49 with 8 fours and a six from Troy Benn. Benn seemed very unfortunate to be given out caught at gully off his pad to off-spinner Ferrier, who broke the explosive 71-run 1st wicket partnership in the 9th over.
Resuming on their 1st day score of 152-2, MSC lost Danny Narayan who was run out in a mix-up with Ferrier for 80 with 11 fours and a six.
Ferrier and Orin Forde (72) then added 113 for the 4th wicket before Forde was caught behind. Kelon Carmichael, in his first game for his new club came out with all guns blazing and launched a calculated attack on the Lawmen to race to 52 before he was taken on the boundary just before Tea. Once Ferrier (104*) reached his 4th first division one century the declaration was made.
Benn played an array of audacious shots against the new ball pair of Seon Daniel and Quesen Nedd as the Police launched a vicious assault on the bowlers.
But once Benn was controversially given out and Shameer Fazal (32) missed a sweep to Orin Forde and was LBW at 101-2, Dwayne McPherson (28) was removed off the last ball of the day’s play. Ferrier has so far taken 2-13 and the Cops need another 102 runs to make MSC bat again. Today is the final day.
At Bourda, GCC, replying to Everest’s 187, began the 2nd day on 182-4 and reached 344 with the left-handed Singh, who has a solitary First-Class match to his name, making 110 and getting support from West Indies ODI player Leon Johnson (53), Waslim Haslim (49) and Chindanand Shivram (27).
Left-arm spinner Rasheed grabbed 5-47 while former West Indies leg-spinner Amir Khan (3-96) and Troy Gonsalves 2-71 supported with the ball for Everest who reached 163-4 by the close.
Gonsalves (45*) and Joseph Perry (35*) are leading a recovery for Everest after Ryan Rajmangal made 34. Ricardo Jadunauth and Shivram have taken 2 wickets each so far and today is the final day of the match with Everest enjoying a slim lead of 16 runs with 6 wickets in hand.
At Enterprise, GDF began the 2nd day on 127-2 replying to the 108 made by Enterprise and fell for 215 with Shemroy Barrington (68) getting support from former Guyana under-19 Keeper Delroy Jacobs (63) and Delon Heyliger (44).
Yadram grabbed his maiden first division 5-wicket haul and got support from leg-spinner Chatterpaul Singh who took 2-43.
The home team were 152-4 by the close with First-Class off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed unbeaten on 52. Parmanand Dindyal (30) and Rohan Mangal (20*) offered support to Mohamed as National pacer Trevon Garraway took 2 wickets.
At DCC, the host took first innings points from West Demerara side New Aqua Line Cavaliers as 19 wickets tumbled on the opening day of that match in Queenstown.
Derwin Christian (53) and Jamal Hinckson (28) failed to get support from the rest of the batsmen as Mahendra Nagamootoo, the highest wicket-taker in Regional First-Class cricket, snatched 4-67, Chien Gittens 2-25 and Balram Samaroo 2-11.
Bishoo, a left-arm back-of-the-hand spinner who played for Guyana in this year’s regional under-19 series in Jamaica, bagged 5 wickets while former Guyana off-spinner and Demerara Coach Gavin Nedd took 2 wickets as the visitors fell for 95-9 innings closed despite a fighting 28 from Coen Ismond playing against his old team. First-Class left-hander Gajanand Singh made 27 as Anthony Ifill was timed out.
Today is the final day in all of the matches.
