Former West Indies Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan returned to Guyana’s domestic cricket for the first time in over a year with 6-13 for GCC while Jamal Hinckson smashed a brutal 45-ball 115 for DCC as action in the Demerara zone of the National Neal & Massy 1st division 40-overs cricket competition continued yesterday.
The 29-year-old Sarwan, a veteran of 81 Tests and 152 ODIs, utilized a rare opportunity to represent his Guyanese club after being one of the senior players to be left out of the West Indies team for this month’s Champions Trophy in South Africa despite his availability.
Sarwan, who has taken 54 First-Class wickets including 23 at the Tests level, grabbed 6-13 from 6 overs of leg-spin as Nandy Park were bundled out for 91 in 25 overs at the Police ground in a game reduced to 35 overs due to overnight rain.
Led by an unbeaten 50 from Elon Fernandes, GCC galloped to 92-2 in 13.2 overs to win by 9 wickets.
Fast Bowler Chindanand Shivram (3-23) was also in the spot light by taking a hat-trick for GCC as Nandy Park lost all 10 of their wickets for 40 runs after Nigel Estriado (34) and Troy Bando (23) had put together 51 for the first wicket. The East Bank Demerara team had opted to bat first on a track with some moisture.
After Waslim Haslim was removed for 7 at 8-1, Fernandes and West Indies ODI left-hander Leon Johnson (28*) tore into the hapless Nandy Park attack as the City side rushed to an emphatic victory.
At DCC, the hosts taught the University of Guyana (UG) students a lesson with a comprehensive 168-run victory after making 275 in 35.2 overs and then dismissing UG for 107 in 27 overs.
Hinckson, who also plays professional club cricket in Trinidad, clobbered 12 sixes and 8 fours in his explosive 115 while Guyana Wicketkeeper Derwin Christian (41), West Indies Under-19 selectee Trevon Griffith (23) and Leron Primo (23) offered support.
Steve Rekheram (3-58) and Dhaniram Seepersaud (3-59) were the main wicket takers for UG.
Jermaine Reynolds top scored with 26 for the students, playing in their debut division one season as Primo (4-20), Griffith 2-6 and former national Under-19 left-arm spinner Leroy Bristol 2-11 bowled DCC to victory.
GDF, despite being strengthened by the inclusion of National fast bowler Trevon Garraway and former Guyana youth pacer Jeremiah Harris, were trashed by Lusignan at Enmore. The Soldiers were bundled out for 68 while Lusignan replied with 69-6.
