Glasgow hearing still pending…
By Edison Jefford
The Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) Disciplinary Committee hearing on Victory Valley Royals’ Orlando Glasgow over an intentional punching infraction is yet to commence though the referee’s report was submitted.
International Basketball Federation (FIBA) referee Sherwin Henry handed over the report that was already belated sometime around last Monday. The report was already a setback for the committee and now the hearing is still stalled.
The LABA Secretary was to present the case to the Disciplinary Committee after delivery of the referees’ report, but when Kaieteur Sport inquired yesterday, it was discovered that the Secretary has not acted thereby freezing the matter.
The many delays and seemingly bureaucratic behaviour over handling the situation puts a daring question in perspective: is the LABA pussyfooting on discipline? This is the initial major conflict situation for President Abdullah Hamid.
Glasgow had intentionally punched Pistons’ Quincy Jones on the Mackenzie Sports Club court during a semi-final game of the recently-concluded Brusche’s Basketball Classic. It was a blatant violation of the sport’s Code of Conduct.
Jones did not hit back at Glasgow after the incident but instead he trusted the LABA for a quick outcome relative to his justice. However, the Disciplinary Committee cannot afford to fail Jones, who saved his retaliation to benefit the sport.
This newspaper understands that the LABA held a Statutory Meeting on Tuesday and the matter was discussed. The Disciplinary Committee was to meet the following day but that did not materialise Kaieteur Sport was informed.
A reliable source said that the Disciplinary Committee meeting on Wednesday would not have been fruitful because Glasgow must be present. The source further informed that he cannot be present during the week, only on weekends.
Further investigations revealed that the meeting on Wednesday may have been mere talks from the beginning since one of the principal officials of the Disciplinary Committee, the Secretary, was not informed of any meeting.
The Secretary of the Disciplinary Committee, who will remain unnamed here, confirmed that he was not informed of any meeting slated for Wednesday and the headline question begs for reiteration: is the LABA pussyfooting on discipline?
