– feel neglected and unwelcome
Two of Guyana’s premier male distance athletes are threatening to boycott the marquee CARICOM 10km Road Race that will be held in Guyana on Sunday, claiming that those in authority have neglected them.
Lionel D’Andrade and Kelvin Johnson updated Kaieteur Sport from Trinidad and Tobago yesterday on their current position in relation to the CARICOM 10k when they said that they would not be leaving Trinidad for the race.
While they failed to identify the institution that they are accusing of neglect, both athletes said that they have certain “needs that those in authority often overlook” and they prefer to compete in a race in Trinidad this weekend.
“We are not coming for the CARICOM 10k. Right now we have certain needs…like who will pay for our ticket to come. We are thinking about the finances and when we check it out, it [coming] really don’t make sense,” they said.
It seem as though the two athletes are aggrieved over the selection of Cleveland Forde to officially represent Guyana in the race as opposed to the selection of a team. They believe that they were neglected in that regard.
“It seems as though Cleveland [Forde] is getting all the support. We are not taking that on but if they have selected Cleveland and Alika [Morgan], let them run,” the duo remarked, adding that their time to shine will come.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport through the National Sports Commission and the Athletic Association of Guyana are locally responsible for the organisation of the fifth CARICOM 10k Road Race.
Morgan is the defending female champion, while Forde’s chances of toppling the current male champion, Pamenos Ballantyne of St. Vincent & Grenadines have increased with dominant victories against him over the past few months in the Caribbean.
“We’ve already seen improvements. We’re coming [to Guyana] until July because we are getting the support we need here [in Trinidad]. The people like us because they see us as competitors,” the duo continued yesterday.
The absence of D’Andrade and Johnson for the CARICOM 10k will certainly affect the host country’s challenge.
