Jamaica’s Under-16 netballers got their Caribbean Netball Association Jean Pierre title defence off to winning start after soundly beating Dominica 65-7 at the Leila Robinson Courts Friday night, as Guyana went down in a close encounter against the Cayman Islands.
Details are sketchy, but Guyana lost 25-18 to the CI.
The young Jamaicans raced to a 6-1 lead in the opening minutes with towering shooter Marvadeen Anderson leading the charge despite a nervous start by the 6′ 10″ Edwin Allen student. With the Dominicans providing little challenge, the Jamaicans easily closed the first quarter with a 13-2 lead.
The second quarter started quite like the first with the Jamaicans dominating their Eastern Caribbean rivals mainly through industrious play from captain Shereesha Richards, Thristina Harwood and Deneen Taylor who launched a number of high passes to Anderson, who had no trouble outjumping her defenders.
At the end of the second quarter the Jamaicans were comfortably positioned with a 29-4 lead, but it wasn’t until a slew of third quarter changes by coach Joan Cargill that brought increased composure and harmony to the Jamaicans’ play.
The tandem of Vanessa Jones, who came on for Anderson, and Taylor combined well to add 36 points in the second half and close off the game for the defending champions.
Team manager Cora Ricketts was pleased with what she saw from the girls.
Taylor ended with 34 goals from 39 attempts, while Anderson managed 24 goals from 41 attempts with Jones supporting with seven goals from 16 attempts. For Dominica, Andrea Remy scored six goals from 13 attempts.
In the other game played Friday night, Barbados got the better of St Lucia 33-26.
