German grandmaster Rainer Buhmann, currently on a three day visit to Guyana, will pay a courtesy call on the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony this morning.
The grandmaster would be accompanied by officials of the Guyana Chess Federation at today’s meeting.
Ranked among the top ten grandmasters of Germany, Buhmann, 28, will be participating in the Heroes Day Chess Cup tournament to be held in Barbados at the end of the month. He has faced such illustrious grandmasters as Michael Adams and Vassily Ivanchuk in a distinguished career that has brought him the coveted title of grandmaster.
It is a little over three decades since a grandmaster last visited Guyana. At present, the majority of the country’s current chess players have never had the opportunity of interacting with a grandmaster. This afternoon from 5:30 pm, Buhmann will meet and interact with the country’s active tournament players at the Foreign Service Institute.
Tomorrow, (Friday) Buhmann will meet with schoolchildren from a number of schools at the West Demerara Secondary. Schools from as far as Linden and Berbice have signalled their intentions to attend the event held on their behalf at the West Demerara Secondary.
Later in the afternoon, (starting at 4:30 pm), grandmaster Buhmann will play 25 of Guyana’s strongest chess players at the Umana Yana in a grand simultaneous display not witnessed in Guyana for many years.
Schoolchildren, in the meantime, will gather at the Queen’s College auditorium on Saturday morning from 10:00am to listen to grandmaster Buhmann and seek advice pertaining to their personal development in the game.
After lunch the same day, Buhmann will face 100 schoolchildren over the chess board in another extravagant display of simultaneous play.
The Guyana Chess Federation is extending a hearty welcome to grandmaster Buhmann to Guyana on behalf of all local chess players.
