Jamaica reached 149-3 by the time bad light stopped play on the truncated opening day of their sixth round West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) regional four-day cricket match against bottom-of-the-table Guyana at the Guyana National Stadium yesterday, as the Guyanese endured another ordinary day in this year’s tournament.
Former West Indies batsman Wavell Hinds (31*) and Donovan Pagan (39*) have so far featured in an unfinished 47-run fourth wicket partnership after joining forces with the visitors on 102-3.
The entire second session and 22 minutes in the final session was lost due to a heavy shower which began during the lunch break and play is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs today with Jamaica in control.
The 26-year-old Pagon, with two Tests under his belt, has so far struck three boundaries in his 157-ball and 156-minute innings while the 32-year-old Hinds, who scored five tons from 45 Tests, has struck three fours and two sixes in his innings which has so far lasted 79 balls and 76 minutes.
Jamaica won the toss and elected to bat in hazy sunshine on a placid track and watched by a handful of spectators, the defending champions began solidly before Xavier Marshall (12) drove off-spinner Narsingh Deonarine to mid-off to leave the score on 44-1.
The 26-year-old Brenton Parchment, who has played two Tests, looked set for his second fifty of the season and played an array of shots on the fast outfield before he pushed forward to leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo and was caught behind at 72-2. Parchment’s 44 lasted 84 balls, 95 minutes and his innings was decorated with seven fours.
Burly Skipper Tamar Lambert joined Pagon and hit off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed, who surprisingly was introduced into the attack after Deonarine, back over his head for six to reach 14 by lunch. Pagon was unbeaten on 19 at the interval with Jamaica on 93-2.
When play resumed in the final session in hazy sunshine, Deonarine and Bishoo were used in tandem and Deonarine struck by trapping Lambert (19) leg before; at 102-3 after the 100 was posted in 134 minutes.
The experienced Hinds, Jamaica’s leading batsman this season, joined Pagon and immediately lofted Deonarine for two off-side sixes in consecutive overs.
Pagon, who along with Hinds and David Bernard are the Jamaicans with 200 runs this season, batted solidly as Jamaica, who lead the points table with 42 pints from four games, consolidated after the demise of Lambert.
Mohamed, in his first game for the season, replaced Deonarine from the Northern end as Hinds stroked Bishoo imperiously through mid-off for four and followed it up with another classic cover driven boundary off the leg-spinner a few over later.
Hinds then caressed Mohamed, who seems to be struggling with his action, gloriously through cover for four and the fourth wicket pair batted attractively before play ended prematurely due to bad light. Deonarine finished with 2-25 while Bishoo took 1-39.
