Berbice name 18 for Castrol under-15 Inter County tourney
Final 13 to be known next week
The selection committee of the Berbice Cricket Board of Control yesterday met and named their squad of 18 for the upcoming Castrol under-15 Inter County cricket competition.
The players selected are Shawn Pereira, Veerapen Permaul, Loyden Lewis, Trevor Thomas, Davendra Jainabi, Videsh Lall, Shilendra Shameer, Bouqnarine Persaud, Linden Austin, Kevin Ramdeen, Bisham Persaud, Rajendra Daesrath, Jamal Jarvis, Mark Basdeo, Gudakesh Motie, Martin Weatherspoon, Jamal Henry and Kandasammy Surujnarine.
The squad was announced by Chairman Leslie Solomon at a press conference held by the Public Relations Department of the Board at their Charlotte Street, New Amsterdam Head Office.
Solomon explained that the players were selected based on their performances during recent tournaments and the two trial matches organised by the board. Their overall discipline, attitude and commitment also formed part of the selection criteria.
Preparations to further trim the squad to 13 will continue under the eyes of coach Andre Percival and manager Julian Cambridge. The final 13 will be named early next week.
At yesterday’s presser, PRO / Chairman of the BCBC Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster announced a series of new initiatives the Board would be implementing with a view to lifting performances.
Among them is the selection of a Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the end of the tournament and that player would receive a bicycle as a special prize. All members of the team including management would receive BCBC Polo Tee Shirts to be used while travelling while each player would receive a $10,000 package consisting of hygiene and educational items.
Players who made their debut this year would also receive Berbice caps as the BCBC continues its cap system which was introduced last year.
Parents of all members of the team would all be required to attend a meeting with executives of the Board where they would be informed of the rules on discipline and overall expectations.
The entire team will be required to attend a one-day skills training seminar where they would be taught table manners, personal hygiene, public manners and art of public speaking. Other topics to be covered include drug abuse, importance of education, HIV/AIDS and peer pressure.
Manager Cambridge and coach Percival both expressed satisfaction with the composition of the squad noting that it was strong in all departments and the players should give a good account of themselves.
The members of the junior selection committee are Solomon, Percival, Romesh Muuna and Moses Samlall.
