A number of coaches across the country are likely to benefit from WICB Accreditation Coaching Courses to be held from the 4th of this month at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
The coaching courses will include modernized methodologies which are geared at facilitating easier learning.
In previous courses emphasis was placed on the “What to Coach Skills” which highlighted the effective execution of specific skills such as a straight drive while batting, a yorker while bowling and the art of throwing.
However, according to former West Indies pacer and Guyana Cricket Board’s Territorial Development Officer (TDO) Colin Stuart, the courses to be held in January, will include an additional component, referred to as the “How to Coach Skills.”
“These skills focus on utilizing the teaching styles available that would foster easier learning. Thus, it narrows its attention on the players’ common and unique learning styles, using such to help players reach self-actualization – a point at which they not only know themselves but through gained knowledge possess a feeling of comfort with and understanding of the player he or she discovers,” the 35-year-old Stuart explained.
Stuart, who played six Tests among his 52 first class matches, explained that it is expected that coaches would be more proficient in helping players achieve success – the players’ continuous realization of an ideal position through the attainment of their highest goals as set out in their visions.
“As a result, the courses are viewed as an integral process in the Coaching Education Programme and while potential candidates are required to pay to participate in the activities, the courses are partly subsidised by the West Indies and Guyana Cricket Boards, Stuart, who played at the first-class level between 1995 and 2003, said.
Some of the coaches that are expected to benefit from the courses are; Test Umpire Eddy Nichols, former West Indies under-19 skipper and Ex Guyana First-Class left-hander Andre Percival, Guyana’s female Cricketer Tremayne Smart and International cricket scorer and West Indies Blind team coach Bharrat Mangru.
Among others expected to participate are; Satnarine Sahedeo, Festus Benn, Zaman Mustapha, Gregory George and Rhonda Pearson (Essequibo), Clive Grimmond, Oswald Waldron, Troy Halley, Edward Burnette, Kevin Ross, Shaun Massiah, Lloyd Lyte, Robin Singh, Sherwin Mc Calmon, Sherwyn Barrow, Rayon Griffith and Jason Benn (Demerara), Veemen Walters, Zahir Moakan, Balram Samaroo, Renwick Batson, Adrian Amsterdam, Winston Smith, Clyde Rawlins, Moolchan Ramlall, Imran Jafarally, Travis Harcourt, Lawrence Bahadur, Gilbert Thom, Anson Barrington, Floyd Benjamin, Kenje Sedoc, Conrad Campbell (Berbice).
Participants are expected to be in training attire and interested persons who have not yet to meet the requirements are asked to contact Stuart on 223-5479 or 602-4896. (Sean Devers)
