Local horseracing action switches to the Norman Singh racetrack at No 6 Village on the West Coast of Berbice, where the authorities of the track in collaboration with the Customs racing stables will stage a grand nine-race meet on Sunday.
Some $4M in prizes, consisting of cash and trophies, is available for the outstanding performers. Entries closed on Sunday last and over 70 horses have entered in what is being touted as one of the biggest race meets on the racing calendar for this year.
With all the race tracks in the country making tremendous strides in improving their facilities, the authorities at the Norman Singh Turf has done tremendous work in making sure the facilities are second to none and standard of racing is of the highest.
A new double-decker stand has been constructed and the grandstand has also been refurbished for the adequate and absolute comfort for those in attendance. The track has also been relayed, with new rails while new toilet facilities with running water have been installed.
Highlighting the days programme will be the feature Banks Premium Beer classic C class event over 1600m, which attracts a $400,000 winner’s purse.
Three American Bred horses; Regal Rahy, Sweet Camel and Run for the Money, which arrived here recently, adds to the excitement as they compete against the best locally which features Sequins, Delmur Gold, Miss Republic, Little Pannie and Isle Be True.
Mr. Colin Elcock’s World Class and the Message two new imports will also be running for the first time.
The 3yrs old event for horses Bred and Born in Guyana and the West Indies has $350,000 as the first prize covering a distance of 1400m, with Jumbo Joy, Bad News, The Gap and Pinch the Cash as the main contenders.
Sweet Romance, Coconut Boy, La Bayamosa and Prixie Fier are the front runners in the
Two-year Open, which will see them galloping over 1200m for a purse of $250,000.
In the F and lower event, $220,000 is available for the winner in the 1200m gallop.
The G and H and lower 1200m sprint carries a first prize of $160,000, while the two-year Old Maiden, non-winners event has $160,000 in prize money and will be run over 1000m.
The other races listed for the day’s programme are the ‘I and lower 1400m race with $140,000 as the top prize, the J and K 1200m gallop with a first prize of $120,000 on offer and the L class 1200m dash will see the winner being collecting 100,000.
Added incentives on Sunday is the drawing of the grand raffle which will see five lucky patrons with tickets taking home the five Jailing scooters which will be up for grabs. Tickets are going fast and are available at a number of stores in Berbice and Georgetown. Racing starts from 12.30 hrs.
