15 local teams to get $200,000 each
In what has become an annual commitment by President Bharrat Jagdeo to the Kashif and Shanghai (K&S) football tournament, the Head of State yesterday handed over $1M to Kashif Muhammad and Aubrey Shanghai Major at the Office of the President for the tournament’s first prize.
In addition to the $1M first prize, each competing football club, of which there are 15, will receive $200,000 each, a further commitment made by the Guyanese Leader.
In October, the President had met with both K&S directors, Kashif Muhammad and Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major at the Guyana International Conference Centre where it was agreed that the finals of the tournament would be held at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence as opposed to Linden where the tournament usually kicks off.
Following the initial discussion, Muhammad had disclosed that one of the match days will be hosted at Buxton on December 21, a return to this venue after six years.
A hinterland team from Region 9 will also participate in the 19th Kashif and Shanghai tournament, sponsored fully by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
