The Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) table tennis team returned home after attending the Charles Ping Pong National Junior Championships in Trinidad and Tobago where they preformed creditably in the two-day event that was held at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex.
Among those performing creditably was Kyle Edghill, who was runner-up to T&T’s Aaron Wilson in the Boys 10 and under division which moved him up one spot from his third place finish in Tobago the previous month.
His sister Chelsea was eliminated in the quarter-finals; bowing out to the #1 seeded Catherine Spicer in the 13 and under category, but returned to reach the final of the 15 and under division, losing once again to Spicer.
She gained sweet revenge over Krystal Taylor, who had beaten her twice in an earlier tournament in Tobago.
Thirteen year-old Queens College student Adielle Rosheuvel was another player to exact revenge when she defeated Kadesia Abbott who had beaten her in the Tobago event.
She placed third in both the 15 and 18 and under divisions.
Rosheuvel was beaten by eventual champion Trenace Lowe in the 18 and under category.
Varsha Panday playing in her first overseas tournament created a major upset when she defeated #3 seed Kristen Scipio of T&T in a hard fought match where she prevailed after displaying superior tactical ability. She placed fifth overall.
Denzel Hopkinson, who looked way below his best, lost to Vimal Roopnarine in the Boys 15 and under category and also failed to make it past the early rounds in the 18 and under division, losing to 3rd seeded Kadeem Moore.
He, however, teamed up with Samuel Fraser to secure a third place finish in the 15 and under Doubles.
Coach and former multiple national champion, Colin France said he was extremely delighted with the team’s performance which has shown steady improvement and is optimistic of continued progress in the future.
