Guyana win 13 medals at ISKF World Shoto Cup Karate tourney
At the end of the finals on Monday evening, the Guyana karate team walked away with 3 gold medals, 6 silver and 4 bronze medals for a total 13 at the ISKF World Shoto Cup Karate tournament staged in Canada.
Gold went to Leah Shariff in girls’ 8-9 Kumite, Kemo Cornelius, Kevin Wong-Kwong-Poi and Shane Wilkinson in the boys’ 10-11 team Kata and with Samuel Ming, Avian Rodrigues and Eric Hing in the boys’ 14-15 team Kata.

Kemo Cornelius got silver in the boys’ 10-11 Kata and Kumite with Kevin Wong-Kwong-Poi getting the bronze in the Kata, while Christy Dey got the individual bronze for the girls’ 10-11 Kata. Kristina Cheeks, Chontelle Sewett and Krysten Sewett won silver in girls 12-13, 14-15 and adult Kumite respectively.
Cheeks then teamed up with Chontelle Sewett and Anissa Rodrigues and got the silver in the girls’ 14-15 team Kata. Bronze also went to Leah Shariff in the individual 8-9 Kata as well as girls’ team Kata with Christy Dey and Chelsea Weekes.
Manager Colin Ming noted, “This has been quite a successful tournament for the Guyana team and had the draws been a bit more favourable, some more medals may have come our way. There was no seeding in the tournament and David Hardy and Nathalie Gibson, who were both Caribbean medalists, had hard first round draws.
“Hardy drew Cameron King of Barbados in the first round and lost. King – who won the rematch after his protest was upheld – went on to win the gold. Gibson drew Maria Maia of Brazil who also went on to win the gold.”
The Manager staged that, “This young and inexperienced team has certainly learnt a lot and the experience should garner well for the future. The team got a lot of praise from their fellow competitors and won themselves some due respect as a karate nation.”
It was noted that Master Frank Woon-A-Tai, who is the vice-chairman of the ISKF, also commended the team manager, Colin Ming, on the team’s fine showing in this their first world tournament.
