GBA continues youth push with Developmental Tournament on Saturday

Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) will continue its aggressive youth development programme on Saturday when it hosts another highly anticipated Developmental Tournament at the Andrew “Sixhead” Lewis Gym.

The event is expected to showcase some of the country’s most promising young and emerging boxing talent, as the GBA remains committed to nurturing the next generation of fighters capable of excelling on both the regional and international stages.

Eyes will be on the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym after their good showing at the last tournament.

Over the years, the Association’s developmental programme has proven to be one of the most productive systems in local sport, producing several of the Caribbean and South America’s top young boxers who continue to climb the ranks while establishing names for themselves in the amateur circuit.

Saturday’s tournament is expected to attract participation from several of Guyana’s leading gyms, including Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym, Pace & Power, New Amsterdam Boxing Academy (NABA), and the Andrew Lewis Gym (ALG), all of which have played critical roles in strengthening the local boxing landscape.

Particular attention continues to be placed on the resurgence of the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym under the guidance of Coach James Walcott. Since the gym’s return, there has been a noticeable boost in the local amateur boxing scene, especially at the youth level, with several young fighters displaying impressive technical growth and discipline inside the ring.

National Coach Lennox Daniels believes the consistent staging of developmental competitions has contributed significantly to the steady improvement being seen among Guyana’s young fighters.

According to Daniels, opportunities for local boxers to represent Guyana at regional and international competitions have become more frequent, making regular competitive exposure at home increasingly important.

At the previous Developmental Tournament, Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym emerged as the standout force of the day, underlining the depth of grassroots talent currently being cultivated across the country’s top gyms.

Several standout performers were also recognised for their performances at the conclusion of the event.

Abu Barker of Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym captured the Best School Age Boxer award after an impressive display of skill and composure.

The Best Junior Boxer accolade went to Itavius Vanderstoop, while Jofes Jackson walked away with the Best Youth Boxer award following another dominant performance in the ring.
