Kaieteur Sports – Contrasting half-century knocks from opener Tagenarine and all-rounder Keemo Paul navigated the Harpy Eagles through a tough opening day’s passage and gained 220-run lead, after a clinical bowling performance from the Windward Volcanoes yesterday following the close of play at the Coolidge Cricket Ground.
Fielding first after winning the toss paid off slightly for the Volcanoes who are currently 2-0 in the series, but did a fair job in keeping Guyana under a 250-run 1st innings score.
Medium-pacer Ryan John spearheaded a brilliant bowling outing by the Volcanoes with figures of 4-18 from 16 overs. Help came in the form of pacer Gilon Tyson (2-40) and leg-spinner Darel Cyrus (3-79), who did the dirty work to help contain the dangerous Eagles batting order.
Guyana, despite a few hiccups, managed to reach a decent enough first innings score of 242 all out in 79.5 overs, led by Chanderpaul who applied himself early and managed to carry his bat past both lunch and tea breaks, to graft another half-century score this season.
The left-hander gritted for his 69 off 212 balls with 8 fours, especially after losing their top four leading batsmen for a combined 40 runs.
Paul’s emergence as a key factor in both departments, especially with the bat down the order again took center stage with a feisty knock of 64 off 57 deliveries which steered the middle/lower-order during a time of crisis.
Volcanoes then suffered arguably their biggest setback minutes before stumps, as fast-bowler Nial Smith (1-11) bagged the big wicket of opener Ackeem Auguste who departed for 2; leaving his team 22-1 with a big uphill task facing Stephan Pascal (13*) and Kavem Hodge (7*).
The first Eagle wicket to go was Chanderpaul’s opening partner, Matthews Nandu (0) who was trapped LBW by Tyson after scratching around for 10 deliveries.
Kevlon Anderson’s mixed form continued, being knocked over by John for 5 runs before Tyson struck again to remove a set Kemol Savory (35) after he found the ropes on 5 occasions.
Skipper Tevin Imlach (5) also fell cheaply to some good bowling from all-rounder Shadrack Descarte (1-36), which was a big blow for the champs.
However, Paul, who has been on a good upward trajectory with both bat and ball this season, aided in the repairs alongside Chanderpaul.
The former West Indies all-rounder pushed the pace with 4 sixes and 5 fours before losing his wicket to push Guyana to 149-5.
Spinners Richie Looknauth (17) and Gudakesh Motie (24) kept runs ticking as they showed their capabilities with the bat down the order during their respective times at the crease.
The huge blow however came when Chanderpaul, who saw the demise of almost the entire team, found himself undone by a beauty from John during the final session of play, despite the Eagles having already flown past the 200-run mark.
The action continues today.
