(Kaieteur News) – A 29-year-old police constable attached to La Parfaite Harmonie is under close arrest following an incident along the West Bank Demerara (WBD) public road that saw him allegedly threaten a group of onlookers with what turned out to be a toy firearm.
The incident occurred on Monday night at around 20:30hrs at Policeman Corner, Westminster, WBD, and involved the off-duty rank and a 25-year-old Quality Health Safety and Environment (QHSE) Officer of Phase One, Westminster.
According to police, the QHSE officer was standing along the roadway with several other people when a motorcar approached and allegedly came dangerously close to colliding with his parked motorcycle. The near-miss sparked a heated exchange between the two men.
During the confrontation, the constable reportedly stepped out of his vehicle, lifted his jersey, and gripped what appeared to be a firearm tucked into his waistband.
Word of the incident quickly reached police ranks, who moved to intercept the vehicle. When officers stopped the car, they identified the driver as a fellow police constable. A subsequent search turned up not a real weapon, but what investigators described as a toy gun.
The constable was taken into custody and escorted to the La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station, where he remains under close arrest as investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the confrontation.
Investigations are ongoing.
