Unicorns torch golden opportunity, as gutsy Warriors retain title in low-scoring thriller

Kaieteur Sports – The San Francisco Unicorns essentially burned their house down last night, imploding during a low-scoring yet probably the best match of the tournament, as they squandered their shot at dethroning the still-champions Guyana Amazon Warriors, who stole a 6-run win following the nail-biting finals played at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Despite the lack of runs, the match was subsequently more exciting and filled with additional tension due to the watchful nature of the situation, which made for a gripping showdown as Guyana defended what is the lowest score in any T20 match played.
The final stretch saw the match state being 7 runs off 12 balls with one wicket in hand before the old warrior, Peter Siddle (13*) tried to hold things together before the final wicket fell via run out.
Electing to bat first, the Warriors suffered a baffling batting collapse after the batting order was scythed through and they fell for a paltry 85 all out in 18.5 overs.

San Francisco Unicorns’ bowling unit completely dominated from the first delivery, led by the elder statesman, pacer Siddle and young spinner Anirudh Immanuel.
Siddle, the 41-year-old former Australian Test pacer, who has somehow managed to rewind the hands of time and bowl as fast and accurately as he did in his international playing days, led the bowling with 3-18.
The young, leggy Immanuel stole the show with returns of 3-7 off his 4 overs, etching his name in the GSL history books with his returns being among the best recorded in the competition.
The 86 needed for victory came at a stiff price as the Unicorns lost their way much like the Warriors but somehow had an even more dramatic collapse by the end of the game.
Former Australia U-19 skipper Oliver Peake and top scorer (31) was the crisis man but failed to carry his team home as they ended on 79 all out.
Fast-bowler Dwaine Pretorius (3-24) and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie (1-15) both picked up wickets with the first ball of their respective overs to help distort the Unicorns’ chase while creating inroads for the other operators.
Taking advantage of the early breakthroughs, ageless Captain, leggy Imran Tahir (2-16) had a breathtaking spell which was reinforced by another sublime exhibition by the wily vet in off-spinner Mohammad Nabi (3-12).
Earlier in the night, the sold-out Guyana crowd saw their beloved team Warriors slip to 16-3 inside the first 4 overs before wickets continued to tumble in quick succession during the middle passage of the game, which further left the home team reeling on 29-8 at one point.
Were it not for the gutsy lower-order contributions from all-rounder Matthew Forde, who hit a top-score of 28 off 23 (2×4 2×6), and Pretorius (17*), the dismal Warriors could have easily been mowed down for less. (Clifton Ross)
