Four remanded for robbing Corentyne family of millions
(Kaieteur News) – Four males were all charged for their alleged involvement in a multimillion-dollar robbery carried out on a No.1 Road, Corentyne family nearly two weeks ago.
The incident took place on the evening of 15th July, 2026, at the home of Narinedutt Ramnarain, called ‘Passy’.
Among those charged are 21-year-old Steve Tsoi, called ‘Timmy’, a construction worker 0f Lot 9 Alness Village, Corentyne, Berbice; 21-year-old Mohan Panchoo, called ‘Leon’, a labourer of Lot 33 Alness Village, Corentyne, Berbice; 24-year-old Derwin Hawker, of Nurney Village, Corentyne, Berbice; and 23-year-old Cristopher Mendonca, called ‘Khris’, of Lot 69 Alness Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
They were apprehended by police in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) between 24th -26th July.
The quartet appeared at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where the charges were read to them by Magistrate Tuana Hardy.
They were subsequently charged with three counts of robbery with violence, contrary to Section 222(a) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.
Ramnarain was robbed of $3,500,000 in cash, while his 30-year-old daughter Jayadevi Ramnarine, a government part-time worker of the same address, was robbed of one gold ring carrying a value of $112,000.
Monica Balgobind, 31, another daughter, was robbed of a quantity of gold jewellery valued at $362,500.
The four men appeared via Zoom at the Albion Magistrate’s Court, where the indictable charges were read to them. Subsequently, bail was denied, and they were remanded to prison.
The matter was adjourned to 18th August, 2026.
Ramnarain had told this publication that he had just finished having dinner that evening and had retired inside while his daughters and grandchildren were outside. Their frantic voices alarmed him, and upon investigating, he noted that he observed the masked men, who were armed with guns and cutlasses.
He disclosed that he was dealt several lashes to his back and head with cutlasses by the men who demanded cash and valuables.
After assaulting his daughters, the men managed to locate the money he had concealed in plastic bags in his clothes baskets.
They then reportedly fired several shots in the air before making good their escape.
