(Kaieteur News) Advertisements for the post of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Guyana attracted 27 applications from Guyana, the wider Caribbean, Canada, and India, Chancellor Sir Ronald Sanders announced in a press statement.
Sir Ronald said considerable progress has been made in the search for a suitable candidate. Following an initial review, the search committee narrowed the pool to 15 candidates for further consideration, the university said on Thursday.
The committee subsequently enlisted the assistance of professors and other university specialists of considerable stature in the United Kingdom to help assess the academic credentials of the candidates and support preparation of a final shortlist. That shortlist has now been narrowed to five candidates, who will proceed to the next stage of the process, including interviews and public lectures, before a final decision is made.
The Chancellor emphasised that the Vice-Chancellor’s post is of critical importance to the University’s future and to Guyana’s national development. He noted that the University must produce graduates with the skills, competencies, and adaptability required to serve a changing and growing economy, while also strengthening research, innovation, and professional training.
Sir Ronald noted that the contract of the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paloma Mohamed, ends on 31st July, 2026, and expressed appreciation for her service to the University.
He also announced that, between July 31 and the assumption of office by the new Vice-Chancellor, the University will be managed by a three-person team drawn from its staff. This interim arrangement, he said, will ensure continuity in university administration while the final phase of the selection process is completed.
The Chancellor reaffirmed the University Council’s commitment to a fair, transparent, and merit-based process, and said the public will be kept informed as the search proceeds.
