Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s quest to advance from the FIBA AmeriCup Caribbean Pre-Qualifiers came to an end on Sunday, as Antigua and Barbuda secured the lone qualifying spot from Group B with a decisive 86-57 victory over the previously unbeaten Turks and Caicos Islands.
The result dashed Guyana’s hopes of extending its campaign, despite the Golden Jaguars producing a commendable recovery after a disappointing start to the tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Barbados played undefeated in their four games in the FIBA AmeriCup Caribbean Pre-Qualifiers at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
With only one team from each group progressing to the next stage of the AmeriCup Qualifiers, every game carried knockout-like importance.
Guyana was drawn in a highly competitive Group B alongside the Turks and Caicos Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica and Bermuda, leaving little room for error throughout the five-day competition.
The Alan Walls-coached side suffered a major setback on the opening night, falling 68-55 to the Turks and Caicos Islands. That defeat ultimately proved costly, forcing Guyana to chase results for the remainder of the tournament while relying on other outcomes to keep its qualification hopes alive.
To their credit, the hosts responded impressively.
Guyana bounced back with a thrilling 75-73 overtime victory over Antigua and Barbuda before producing a convincing 68-53 win against Dominica.
They then completed a three-game winning streak by edging Bermuda 59-56 in a tense encounter to finish the preliminary round with a 3-1 record.
Despite winning three consecutive games, Guyana’s fate was no longer in its own hands.
The hosts needed Antigua and Barbuda to defeat the unbeaten Turks and Caicos Islands by more than eight points to keep alive their mathematical chances of advancing.
Antigua did exactly that, producing a dominant defensive performance to secure a 58-31 victory and punch its ticket to the next round, while simultaneously ending Guyana’s campaign.
Elsewhere, Barbados completed a flawless campaign in Group A to comfortably book its place in the next phase of the AmeriCup Qualifiers.
The Bajans opened with an 89-54 victory over the Cayman Islands before defeating Haiti 91-68, Grenada 99-77 and St. Vincent and the Grenadines 96-84 to finish unbeaten.
While the AmeriCup dream has been put on hold, Guyana’s basketball calendar remains packed.
The men’s national 3×3 team will now shift its focus to making history at next week’s Commonwealth Games in Scotland, where Guyana will make its debut in the men’s 3×3 competition against some of the world’s top nations.
Attention will also turn to the upcoming Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games 3×3 tournament, where both Guyana’s men’s and women’s teams will be aiming to build on the momentum generated during recent international competitions.
