(Kaieteur News) – John Walker Rudder of Islington Village, Berbice, has reached another remarkable milestone, celebrating his 104th birthday on Sunday and further cementing his place among Guyana’s oldest living citizens.
Since joining the exclusive ranks of centenarians four years ago, Rudder has remained a familiar face in the headlines. This year was no different, as children, grandchildren and other relatives gathered to celebrate the man whose long life has become a treasured family tradition.
Born on July 12, 1922, Rudder grew up with 10 siblings and later built a life with his wife, Margaret Haynes-Rudder. Their marriage, which has spanned more than six decades, was blessed with seven children.
His youngest son, Wilton Rudder, believes there is only one explanation for his father’s extraordinary longevity.
“It’s a special privilege to be part of his life at this age, especially when we consider the youths not even making 20, 25. For him to have lived all these years until now, I think the only thing I can attribute it to is God.”
The young Rudder remembers his father as a hardworking provider who always put his family first.
“We weren’t able to get all of the amenities of life, but food, food was always on the table. He always provided for his children. You can’t go hungry with my father. If he has to take his and give it to you, that’s it.”
He said his father’s legacy is defined not simply by living for more than a century, but by the kind of husband, father and Christian he has been throughout his life.
Although age has slowed him physically and limited his speech, Rudder’s faith remains as strong as ever. A devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, conversations with him almost always turn to God, scripture and the importance of living a Christian life.
“He loves to talk about his life as a Seventh-day Adventist. That’s his topic. Coupled with that, he gives encouragement. He likes to talk about since he accepted the Lord,” Wilton said.
Now unable to walk without assistance, Rudder spends his days at home in Islington with his 96-year-old wife and a caregiver. Another son lives nearby and helps to care for both parents.
