Kaieteur Sports – Riding high after their world-class performance in the last match, Windies enter today’s series decider in Antigua with tons of confidence after the crushing innings and 217-run win which essentially put them on this path to victory.
The Test world-record 6th-wicket partnership headlined by double-centurion Amir Jangoo (233) and centurion, skipper Roston Chase (194), seemingly put the world on notice that the Caribbean side could be looking to return to some form of dominance in this format.
Their pair’s time in the middle surpassed the decade-old previous best of 399 set by former England skipper Ben Stokes and wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow.
Despite a resounding time with the bat, today’s match could likely see a few changes with the return of fit-again Shai Hope and Guyanese all-rounder Keemo Paul, who was recently drafted to the squad.
Jangoo and Chase’s 401-run stand came after the Windies found themselves in trouble at 168-5, reflecting a stutter from the top-order batters which could be corrected today after gaining additional confidence.
Outside of the batting rise, the Windies have been quietly maintaining a statistical edge over other Test nations since January 2024.
Their bowling unit has been averaging roughly 23.13 in home conditions thanks to their bevy of pacers, as Kemar Roach, who just got to his historic 300-wicket milestone; Guyanese Shamar Joseph; Alzarri Joseph; Jayden Seales; and now another seam option in Paul, who makes his return to Test cricket; will be more than crucial today.
Seales, will also be keen on bagging his 100th Test wicket as he enters today’s battle just one scalp away from his milestone.
The visitors lost the T20 series and then were victims of a huge innings and 217-run defeat in the opening game, with Dinesh Chandimal scoring 802 runs and averaging almost 50 this tour, their best batsman.
The last successful Test series in Antigua was in 2021, when they racked up 476, further showing their batting capabilities in the Caribbean.
Although the Windies pacers have out-bowled them, the trio of Vishwa Fernando, Asitha Fernando, and Milan Rathnayake, especially, will need to tighten up during their spells and will need to forget their recent outing should they look to help Sri Lanka end the series with something of substance.
The first ball is expected to be bowled off from 10:00 hrs.
