Kaieteur Sports – Young aspiring cricketers will have an opportunity to sharpen their skills and learn from some of Guyana’s finest cricket minds when the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) hosts its 2026 Youth Cricket Summer Camp from August 17-28 at the club’s historic Queenstown ground.
Open to boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 19, the 10-day programme is designed to introduce newcomers to the game while helping developing players refine their technique and expand their understanding of cricket.
Registration for the camp costs $12,000, with parents and guardians required to submit the necessary registration information to secure a place.
Activities will run daily from 9:00 a.m., featuring far more than on-field cricket instruction. Participants will receive coaching in the game’s fundamental skills, including batting, bowling, fielding and match awareness, while also benefiting from sessions on captaincy, first aid, media interaction and other life skills aimed at developing well-rounded young athletes.
A dress code of white T-shirts or polo shirts, track pants and track shoes will also be in effect throughout the camp to ensure a safe and incident-free programme.
For generations, the Demerara Cricket Club has been synonymous with cricketing excellence in Guyana. Widely regarded as the country’s “House of Legends,” the Queenstown pavilion has produced some of the nation’s greatest players, many of whom went on to represent the West Indies with distinction.
Among the illustrious names to emerge from DCC are Sir Clive Lloyd, the iconic captain who guided the West Indies to back-to-back ICC Cricket World Cup titles in 1975 and 1979; Lance Gibbs, the first West Indies bowler to claim 300 Test wickets; Roy Fredericks, one of the Caribbean’s most accomplished opening batsmen; Roger Harper, celebrated as one of the world’s finest fielders; along with Travis Dowlin, Christopher Barnwell, Keemo Paul, Sherfane Rutherford, Derwin Christian, Keith Semple and Philbert Blair, among many others.
The club’s rich legacy stretches back even further to Maurice Fernandes, the first captain to lead the West Indies to a Test victory over England, reinforcing DCC’s reputation as one of the region’s premier cricket nurseries.
For many of Guyana’s cricketing greats, the journey began on the same grounds at Clive Lloyd and Shiv Chanderpaul Drive. This year’s summer camp aims to continue that tradition by providing young players with expert coaching, mentorship and an environment that encourages both sporting and personal growth.
Parents seeking a productive and enriching activity for their children during the August vacation are encouraged to register early, as the camp is expected to attract strong interest.
From August 17, the next generation of Guyanese cricketers will once again have the chance to begin their journey where so many legends first took guard at the Demerara Cricket Club.
