Kaieteur Sports – St. Rose’s, Saints, Berbice High and Kwakwani Secondary Schools advanced to the semifinals of the Boys’ Under-16 division at the KFC National Schools Basketball Festival on day two, as action intensified in the Under-14 and Under-18 divisions.
It has been an ultimate test for most of the contending schools, with the top seeds carrying their playoff form into the national championships.
The Bishops High, Good Hope Secondary, Queen’s College and St Stanislaus College all started well. Bishops High pounced on North Georgetown Secondary, with Ethan Henry turning in a brilliant two-way performance — 12 points and 14 rebounds, to fuel a 24-5 victory.
Christopher Claxton and Jafer Matthews spearheaded a 16-point win for Good Hope Secondary over Marian Academy, each adding ten points and combining for 11 rebounds to shut down Marian’s attack in a 28-12 affair.
Queen’s College proved too good for President’s College, downing them 24-4. PC came in as the better team on paper, but Yohan Langevine’s perfect 10-point, 10-rebound performance powered QC to the upset.
Saints handed Christ Church Secondary their first defeat of the tournament, 22-12, behind a double-double from Nathan Baptiste, who finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds to move his team into a solid position.
The U18 division saw the young stars collide. Saints wasted no time asserting their dominance, thumping Brickdam Secondary 35-9. Hartley Price did the bulk of the scoring with 13 points, while Demitri Crandon and Rolson Pollard added eight points apiece to secure the team’s first win of the competition.
Tutorial Academy and The Bishops High met in a massive matchup, with Bishops prevailing 33-21 on the strength of Kemol Pickering and Logan Simpson, who combined for 23 points.
East Coast regional champions President’s College closed out day two with a dominant performance, defeating St Joseph High by the biggest margin of the day. It was an overall team effort for PC: Terron Mohabir was excellent from the outside with 13 points, Romario Wolfe continued his strong form with 10 points, and Omarie Grandison’s eight-point contribution rounded out a commanding 48-6 win.
Samuel Welcome headlined day two as top performer, leading New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary to a hard-fought, 34-31 victory over Government Technical Institute with a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds.
Earlier in the day, Tutorial Academy defeated Queen’s College 18-7 in the Girls’ U16 division, with Jada Alexander posting six points, seven rebounds and three steals. JC Chandisingh Secondary claimed their first win of the championship, edging Marian Academy 11-6 behind Jada Minty’s five points, four rebounds and five steals.
In the Boys’ U16 division, St Rose’s High defeated Marian Academy 43-12, Saints toppled QC 24-22, Berbice High remained unstoppable with a 34-18 win over Hururu Secondary, and Kwakwani Secondary edged Line Path 27-25 — all four advancing to the semifinals.
The tournament is sponsored by KFC, with support from Edward B. Beharry, G-Boats Inc., the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. Action continues today.
