Minister Ramson Jr. envision Guyana’s horseracing to be greatest in region
Kaieteur Sports – The 18th running of the Guyana Cup promises to be an iconic event on August 23, at Rising Sun Turf Club.
While all eyes will be on this year’s race and the top horses that will be out to battle the defending champion, Dataman Minister of Culture, youth and sport is anticipating this event to be the greatest in the Caribbean in the near future.
“I have total confidence that Guyana will be able to be the greatest horseracing industry in the region,” the Minister said at the launching of the Guyana Cup.
“This has been running for 18 years and it is fitting that the races is running under a regulatory framework.”
“This event has the support of the entire government. The horse racing industry will be a key driver for sport tourism and economic activities in region five and region six,” the Sport Minister explained.

The consistency and longevity of the Jumbo Jet family has been symbolic, for hosting such an event, and improving yearly.
Minister Ramson noted that the economic activity driven from Guyana Cup is beyond significant.
“Horseracing is a fixture of our calendar events. If you are to remove this event from Region five you will remove hundreds of millions of economic activity that will be generated from Guyana Cup period alone,” the Minister added.
“We have had to drive a lot sports. For horse racing it wasn’t so.”
The horseracing legislation took some 26 meetings leading into formal passage in parliament for the legislation. Since the legislation passed last year, cabinet approved the committee for the horseracing authority led by Stephen Cheefoon.
This year’s Guyana Cup will add more of the Guyanese touch, involving more local artists and displaying the rich heritage of Guyana. Additionally, the Guyana Cup will have a more family-oriented atmosphere with play parks and giveaways for the entire family.
“Our version of the horse racing industry must be fit for Guyana’s purpose. There must be social utility in the facility,” Minister Ramson highlighted.
A total of 14 races will be running at this year’s Guyana Cup and more than G$ 66 million in cash and prizes will be paid out. A lucky fan will also be a winner of a brand-new SinoTruk pick-up.
The feature race which will be the Banks Guyana Cup will fetch a purse of G$22 million.
