Woman jailed 11 years for setting ex-boyfriend ablaze
(Kaieteur News) – A 26-year-old woman has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for setting her ex-boyfriend on fire during a dispute over a missing wallet, an act that left him hospitalised for weeks before he died from his injuries.

Melissa David appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Georgetown High Court on Wednesday, where the sentence was handed down. David had pleaded guilty in April to manslaughter, after an initial murder charge was reduced to the lesser count.

David and her victim, 31-year-old Edmond Moses, shared a child and had previously been in a relationship. Though separated, the two continued to live in adjacent apartments within the same building on New Market Street, Georgetown.

On May 22, 2024, Moses raised an alarm after discovering his wallet was missing, claiming it had contained $18,000. David returned the wallet empty. When Moses pressed her about the missing money and accused her of attempting to steal it, a heated argument erupted into a physical confrontation.
During the struggle, David doused Moses with thinners and set him alight.
Moses was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he received treatment for his burns. He succumbed to his injuries on July 11, 2024, nearly seven weeks after the attack.
David was charged with murder following his death. The charge was subsequently reduced to manslaughter, to which she entered a guilty plea in April.
