Court orders govt. to pay outstanding IDPADA-G subvention
(Kaieteur News) – The Government of Guyana has been ordered to pay the outstanding subvention to the International Decade for People of African Descent Assembly–Guyana (IDPADA-G). The ruling was made by Chancellor (Ag) Roxane George-Wiltshire, who heard the case as Chief Justice.
The organisation in a statement, said the court ruled that government acted improperly in abruptly terminating funding to IDPADA-G. The judge ordered that the organisation be paid the subventions due for the remaining months of 2022.
Delivering her decision, the chief justice acknowledged the considerable delay in the issuance of the judgment and offered an apology to the parties.
IDPADA-G noted that the ruling brings closure to a matter that has been of significant concern. Payment of the remainder of the 2022 subvention essentially represents outstanding debts to its employees, grantees, and service providers.
“We therefore look forward to the government honouring and expeditiously implementing the court’s ruling, thereby enabling IDPADA-G to fulfil its outstanding commitments and bring relief to the individuals and communities that have borne significant hardship as a consequence of the discontinuation of the subvention,” IDPADA-G said.
The organisation also said it remains steadfast in its mission to advance the objectives of the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent and to promote the social, cultural, economic, and developmental interests of people of African descent in Guyana. Despite significant challenges, IDPADA-G said it remains committed to constructive engagement in the national interest.
IDPADA-G expressed gratitude to its legal team, supporters, partner organisations, and the many individuals who demonstrated confidence in the organisation’s cause and principles throughout these proceedings.
“As Guyana continues its journey toward greater inclusion, equity, and national development, IDPADA-G hopes that this matter serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting democratic institutions, safeguarding civil society, and ensuring that all citizens and organizations are treated fairly under the law,” it further stated.
