Man pleads guilty to 2023 murder of businessman
(Kaieteur News) – Yogendra Sukhdeo, a man who cultivated a self-styled mafia persona on social media under the name “El Chapo Escobar,” pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the brutal murder of 21-year-old businessman Amit Singh of Delph Street, Campbellville — a killing driven by greed and executed through deception.
Sukhdeo entered his guilty plea before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Georgetown High Court. Sentencing has been scheduled for July 9, 2026.

Singh, who was Sukhdeo’s friend, was lured to his death on October 24, 2023, through a fabricated offer to purchase a large quantity of gold. The young businessman assembled $7.9 million in cash to complete the deal.
Sukhdeo picked Singh up from his Delph Street and Campbell Avenue home in a vehicle bearing a false number plate, then drove him to his father’s property at Middle Road, La Penitence — where he beat him to death and stole the cash.

Following the murder, Sukhdeo initially told investigators that he and three employees had jointly robbed and killed Singh. Police tracked down the named men, but all denied involvement and provided alibis that held up under scrutiny.
Sukhdeo later confessed to acting alone. He told police he wrapped Singh’s body in a sheet, locked up the house, and drove to his home at Diamond, where he concealed the stolen money.
An autopsy conducted by government pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh confirmed that Singh died from blunt trauma to the head and face, with multiple fractures recorded. The pathologist also noted blunt trauma to the neck and broncho-aspiration of blood — blood present in the nostrils and lungs. The court heard that Singh fought for his life before succumbing to his injuries.
