(Kaieteur News) – Twenty-one consultancy firms have submitted bids to design and supervise the construction of six new primary schools spanning Regions One, Two, Four, Five, Six, and Ten — part of a US$90 million Inter-American Development Bank initiative aimed at transforming educational infrastructure for some of Guyana’s most underserved communities.
The bids were opened at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board office, drawing a competitive field of local and international firms with engineering, architectural, and project management expertise.
The project targets six communities where inadequate or absent facilities have long forced children to travel difficult distances to reach the nearest classroom:
The Parakeese facility is designed to serve 200 children from the mainland and surrounding islands, eliminating the gruelling daily commutes by road and boat that students currently make to reach Kamwatta Primary School.
“By bringing high-quality facilities directly to the community, the ministry is decentralising educational resources to ensure that geography never dictates a child’s potential,” the Ministry of Education stated in April.
The bidders are as follows:
The schools form part of the IDB-financed Support for Education Recovery and Transformation project, approved in 2023. The Ministry of Education stated that the financing is intended to expand access to safe and improved learning environments and enhance educational services for vulnerable students nationwide.
Community engagement has already begun in several regions. In May, the Regional Democratic Council of Region Five convened a stakeholder consultation at Experiment, where residents were briefed on the proposed school’s design, environmental considerations, and anticipated community impact. The RDC emphasised that the process was designed to ensure “residents and stakeholders are actively involved” at every stage of development.
Region Two’s Regional Administration similarly held public consultations in April with Suddie-area residents and stakeholders, laying the groundwork for community buy-in ahead of construction.
With bids now in hand, the NPTAB will evaluate submissions before a consultancy firm is selected to lead the design and supervision process. Construction timelines have not yet been publicly confirmed.
