‘No ulterior motive behind social media regulations for children’ – AG
(Kaieteur News) – Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, SC, has assured the general public that there are no ulterior motives behind the planned social media regulations that will be implemented for children, stressing that it is merely for their safety.
Speaking on Tuesday night’s episode of ‘Issues in the News’ Nandlall explained that the initiative is devoid of any disadvantage because children will still have social media access it is just that it will be managed.
“They will continue to have access to educational programmes but they will not have access to pornography, and what they have access to will depend upon their age. The entire world is moving in this direction. The entire world. I don’t understand,” he said.

The AG said that the opposition’s attempts to make the issue seem like a negative thing is merely them pulling at straws, noting that a part of his presentation spoke to the level of comfort felt when certain things pop up on one’s Facebook page.
Speaking to an article recently carried in the media he said that, “the reporter writes the government is uncomfortable with what happens on Facebook. I never said the government, I said all of us. You tell me if you are pleased with every single thing that you have seen on Facebook over the past 24 hours. You tell me if you don’t find certain things offensive, but if I say that it becomes the government that is what these that’s what you got to deal with here now.”
Nandlall clarified that it was not a case where anyone was trying to stop Facebook, because that cannot be done to a global platform. It is simply as case of countries trying to regulate what happens in cyberspace and Guyana moving towards the same direction.
He pointed out that the United Nations has already produced a model legislation which 177 countries have already signed on to, so regulating social media for children is not something that is going to happen it is already here.
“How are you going to regulate this global platform if you don’t have a relationship with the global platform? I said in my remarks that the Government of Guyana has written to Facebook; to Meta seeking to establish a formal institutional relationship with Meta, and that is being spun negatively that the government is seeking to censor the government,” Nandlall lamented.
He said legislations in this regard have already been passed by Europe, Australia, and half of Asia. Even Brazil has a very comprehensive legislation.
The General Secretary of CARICOM was also present at an engagement recently on the issue “and she confirmed that the entire Caribbean Community is having the consultation and the conversation that we were having in relation to bringing a regulatory framework,” he added.
“So, I want to assure the listening public and the viewing public that this initiative upon which we are consulting has no ulterior motive. No political content and is not inspired or driven by any form of desire to control or censor. It is to accord paramount importance and protection to the welfare of our children. That is what this initiative is designed to achieve to ensure paramount protection and advancement of the welfare of our children,” the AG assured.
