(Kaieteur News) – The Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on Wednesday said a new $512,300,000 state-of-the-art baggage handling system is currently being installed at the airport and will be completed next month.
This is according to CJIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ramesh Ghir who noted that the major infrastructure upgrade is moving apace.
According to a release from CJIA, once fully operational, this system will vastly improve the traveler experience by allowing passengers to drop off their checked bags directly at the airline counters, where screening will then be conducted remotely. CJIA said that to support this system, new and modern baggage scanners are also being installed to ensure seamless backend operations.

A new $512 million baggage handling system being installed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
Commenting on the system, Ghir stated that this upgrade is a major shift in how they process departures at the airport.
“Passengers will no longer be required to manually take their checked luggage to a separate scanner after checking in, making the journey through our airport significantly smoother and more stress-free,” he said.
In addition to that, the upgrade is expected to significantly boost airline operational efficiency and inject a high level of integrity into the entire check-in system. CJIA stated that to ensure maximum safety and accountability, several new cameras are being installed to provide full, uninterrupted CCTV coverage from the moment a bag is checked until it is safely placed onto the aircraft.
Law enforcement officers and baggage screeners will also be required to wear body cameras. Commenting on these stringent security measures, the CEO said, “We are introducing multiple layers of accountability. The integration of advanced CCTV coverage alongside body-worn cameras for our screeners and law enforcement personnel ensures total transparency, reinforces safety, and secures the integrity of our entire baggage handling operation.”
As reported before, government officials on numerous occasions said that the upgrades at the country’s main airport are strategic steps preparing Guyana to become a major aviation hub.
