Timehri United, Potaro Strikers open Elite League Qualifiers with victories
Kaieteur Sports – The road to the 2026 Elite League began in competitive fashion on Saturday as Timehri United FC and Potaro Strikers FC secured opening-round victories in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League Qualifiers at the National Training Centre.
With promotion aspirations on the line, both clubs made positive starts to their campaigns, collecting valuable wins in their quest to earn a coveted place among Guyana’s top-flight football clubs.

The day’s opening fixture delivered plenty of drama as Potaro Strikers edged Paradise Invaders FC 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the teams battled to an entertaining 2-2 draw in regulation time.
Paradise Invaders struck first through Titus Webster, who sliced through the Potaro defence before calmly finishing in the 27th minute to hand his side a 1-0 advantage heading into the interval.
Potaro emerged with renewed urgency in the second half and found their equaliser in the 70th minute when Joshua James converted to bring the contest level.
The back-and-forth affair continued as Javell Fraser restored Paradise’s lead in the 83rd minute, seemingly putting his side on course for victory. However, Potaro refused to surrender and found a dramatic late response through Cobi-Ray James, whose equalising strike forced the encounter into a 2-2 deadlock at full time. With neither side able to be separated, the match was decided from the penalty mark, where Potaro Strikers held their nerve to prevail 4-3 and secure the extra point.
In the second fixture of the evening, Timehri United FC produced a disciplined performance to register a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mahaica Determinators FC.
Following a tightly contested opening half in which both teams struggled to find a breakthrough, Keyron Williams emerged as the difference-maker. The forward delivered the decisive moment in the 56th minute, clinically converting his opportunity to give Timehri a slender but crucial lead.
Buoyed by Williams’ strike, Timehri continued to press forward while remaining organised at the back. Mahaica Determinators showed resilience defensively throughout the contest, but they were unable to find an equaliser as Timehri’s backline stood firm to preserve the clean sheet. The victory places Timehri in a favourable early position as the qualifying tournament gathers momentum.
Action in the Elite League Qualifiers continues this week with Beavers FC set to face Queenstown United, while Camptown FC will battle Potaro United as teams continue their pursuit of Elite League football.
The tournament serves as the Guyana Football Federation’s pathway competition, providing lower-ranked clubs with an opportunity to earn promotion into the nation’s premier football championship.
