Big Draughts show down with Duo on Sunday at Transport Sports Club
Kaieteur Sports – A big Draughts showdown is set for this Sunday at the Transport Sports Club Pavillion between multiple time Champions Jiaram from East Bank Demerara Region 4 and Linden player Floyd Cumberbatch Region 10. Draughts is stepping up rapidly on the local scenes and to some extent on the International arena.
Jiaram has won both the Mashramani and Independence Draughts Competitions so far for 2026 and Draughts enthusiast Mr. Omotosho Yearwood is optimistic on what will be the outcome if these two champions should play for a championship game. This Sunday 12 games would be played and a winner would be decided. Should there be a drawn affair then a tie breaker will decide within three games. Should there be a further tie then the sponsor will decide on the purse.
The two contestants: Jiaram and Cumberbatch.
Mr. Omotosho Yearwood is putting up a small purse of twenty thousand dollars ($20,000) for Sunday’s event.
Statistics showed that after the commencement of the game in 2023 and after the COVID-19 break that put a halt on all sports; Mr. Jiaram has 4 wins and Cumberbatch 5 wins over the same period. On the other hand, Mr. Jiaram has 5 second places whilst Cumberbatch has 2 seconds for the same periods.
The games would be played under the auspices of the National Draughts Association. All Club rules under the Transport Sports Club must be adhered to since it is expected that several Draughts supporters would be present. Since Transport Sports Club is now a hive for Draughts, the game is moving apace under the Club’s President Dr. Ivor English. Jiaram is the President of the National Draughts Association and both gentlemen are working assiduously to maximize the sport.
This game shall set precedence for more of its kind in the future. Draughts is a pretty cheap game since it does not attract much spectators, however, the magnitude is worldwide.
