Dear Sports Editor,
Carmen Ashlekha Sukhoo-Pertab born on April 9, 1951 was indeed a remarkable soul.
We extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family on her peaceful passing on April 30, 2026. She hails from the beautiful village Richmond, in Essequibo Coast surrounded by six loving siblings. Carmen was the devoted mother who took pride into raising and nurturing her Children.
Her professional journey began in the early 1970s as a switchboard operator at Suddie Hospital perfectly suiting her natural gift for connecting with people. This led her to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation as confidential secretary to the Hospital Administrator and later to the Minister of Health. In the mid-1980s, she joined CARICOM, rising from the steno pool to the Communications Department over nearly two decades. She participated in Heads of government meetings and traveled extensively across the Caribbean, experiences that enriched her love for the region she called home.
Carmen was very active with the Amateur Athletic Association and Cycling Federation. Her commitment was recognized when she proudly attended the 2000 Olympics in Sydney as part of the Guyanese Delegation, reflecting her lifelong dedication to community and Country.
She found her peace in gardening, nurturing plants, sewing and crocheting.
Carmen had a passion to work with young people particularly Sports Enthusiasts. At the Inter-Guiana Games, the Guyana Games and other big events Carmen supported the athletes in all the disciplines. She was a disciplinarian and person that insist on Fair Play. She was a vociferous person against Crime and Drugs.
Carmen achieved what all Sports personality endeavour and dream of. She was present at the Sydney Olympics Games, Australia.
