Kaieteur Sports – Former Guyana Football Federation (GFF) General Secretary, Ian Alves, has been banned from all football-related activities for five years after the world governing body, FIFA, found that he sexually harassed female staff members.
The sanction was handed down by FIFA’s independent Ethics Committee, which also imposed a fine of 20,000 Swiss francs (approximately US$22,000).
Alves, who abruptly resigned from his position at the GFF in 2024, was found to have breached multiple provisions of FIFA’s Code of Ethics.
According to a report from Reuters, the violations include breaches related to the protection of physical and mental integrity, abuse of position, and failure to adhere to general duties expected of football administrators.
The ruling effectively sidelines Alves from any involvement in the sport at both the national and international levels for the duration of the ban.
In response, the GFF acknowledged the decision of FIFA’s Adjudicatory Chamber of the Independent Ethics Committee and confirmed its full cooperation throughout the investigation.

The federation stated that it had formally reported the matter and worked closely with FIFA in strict accordance with all applicable regulations and procedures.
“The Federation maintains a comprehensive framework of policies and codes of conduct that demand the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability from all staff and officials. The GFF Council reiterates its zero-tolerance stance on any form of abuse of power or misconduct,” the federation said in an official release.
The GFF further emphasised its ongoing commitment to transparency, good governance, and safeguarding the integrity of football in Guyana. The body noted that maintaining a safe and professional environment remains a top priority as it continues efforts to strengthen administrative standards within the sport.
The case represents a significant development for football governance in Guyana, highlighting the importance of accountability at all levels of administration. It also underscores FIFA’s continued push to enforce ethical standards globally, particularly in matters involving abuse of authority and the welfare of individuals within the game.
With the ruling now public, attention will likely turn to ensuring that structures remain in place locally to prevent similar incidents and reinforce trust in the management of the sport.
