Kaieteur Sports – Statistician Charwayne Walker takes a look back at boxing here in Guyana in the early 60’s when the lads from Albouystown showed their mettle to bring honours to Guyana.
Walker notes, the ghetto boys were wordy ambassadors in 1962, a boxing team from the ‘so called’ depressed community of Albouystown in July 1962 were great ambassadors when they humbled Barbados amateur boxers four to one in a boxing tournament in Bridgetown July 1962, 64 years ago.
Walker disclosed that the team was led by Ivelaw Glen and included the 1959 Pan American Games bronze medalist Carl Crawford.
Summary of the 1962 tournament: Barbados highly favoured Stephen Lewis, who had won a bronze medal at the Central American Games in Jamaica, lost to British Guiana’s middleweight champion Neville Husbands in the 166lbs division, he lost on points.
Captain Ivelaw Glenn (142lbs) won easily from Richard Carter by a technical knockout. The referee stopped the fight in the third round.
Michael Beckles (117lbs) won on points from Patrick Sealey (115lbs) and Roy Charles (122lbs) won his bout against John Bridgeman (127lbs). Bridgeman retired in the 39 ninth second because of a dislocated shoulder.
Walker further stated that the boxers from the Albouystown YMCA left an indelible mark on this community, that in later years, this community produced world champions Andrew ‘Six head’ Lewis, Shondell Alfred, Commonwealth champion Andrew Murray and Guyana’s youngest ever national champion Glen Ford.
The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association led by Director of Sports Mr. Steve Ninvalle is continuing this drive, by promoting boxing in several rural areas across Guyana with the backing of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and the National Sports Commission.
