Kaieteur Sports – The inaugural Modec Tertiary Education Football Tournament is heading for a thrilling climax after a dramatic quarterfinal double-header at the Queen’s College ground in Georgetown on Sunday.
When the dust settled, four contenders emerged with title ambitions firmly intact; New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI), Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre (UCITC), Essequibo Technical Institute (ETI) and Mahaicony Technical Institute (MTI).
New Amsterdam Technical Institute and Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre had already secured their semifinal berths. They were joined yesterday by Essequibo Technical Institute (ETI) and Mahaicony Technical Institute (MTI), both producing commanding performances to complete the final four lineup.

Clinical performance from Essequibo Technical Institute keeps hope alive, topping UG 2-0 in quarterfinal showdown.
ETI delivered one of the tournament’s biggest statements, shutting out the University of Guyana (Turkeyen Campus) 2-0 in a disciplined and tactically sound display. After 25 minutes of probing attacks and stern resistance from UG’s backline, Jamal Smith broke the deadlock in the 30th minute, slicing through the defense to give Essequibo the advantage.
UG pressed for an equaliser before the halftime whistle but were unable to breach ETI’s organised defence. In the second half, Essequibo tightened their grip on the contest. Star striker Deangelo Davidson doubled the lead in the 66th minute, finishing confidently to put his side firmly in control. From there, ETI remained composed, sealing a well-earned 2-0 victory and booking their place in this week’s semifinals.
The second encounter proved equally compelling, as MTI rallied from behind to eliminate Linden Technical Institute (LTI) with a 2-1 triumph.
LTI struck first in spectacular fashion in the 16th minute when Dexter Milo unleashed a looping effort from the left-wing that sailed over the goalkeeper and dipped just beneath the crossbar for a stunning opener.
But MTI refused to be rattled. Omar Williams then levelled the score in the 33rd minute, reacting quickest to a loose ball and steering it past the goalkeeper to make it 1-1. Just three minutes later, Youance Francis capitalised in similar fashion, nudging home what proved to be the decisive goal as MTI surged into a 2-1 lead.

Mahaicony Technical Institute prevailed to 2-1 win over Linden Technical Institute to move into Modec’s semifinal.
Despite an entertaining second half filled with attacking intent, LTI could not find a way back, as MTI held firm to secure their semifinal berth.
With the final four confirmed, the tournament now moves into its most decisive phase. New Amsterdam Technical Institute will clash with Essequibo Technical Institute for a place in the championship match, while Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre faces Mahaicony Technical Institute in the other semifinal showdown.
As the inaugural competition approaches its conclusion, the stage is set for a fitting finale, four determined institutions, one championship trophy, and everything still to play for.
The tournament is made possible through sponsorship from Modec Guyana, with support from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, MVP Sports, Demerara Mutual Group, MACORP and Power Ade Energy.
